In 1994 Pulp Fiction blew onto the film scene, won virtually every award in sight, became an instant classic, returned John Travolta to superstardom, and made Quentin Tarantino a household name. In honor of Tarantino’s cinematic achievement and to celebrate this landmark anniversary, IFC will present Pulp Indies Week starting on Monday, June 7. The week-long festival will culminate with the IFC premiere of Pulp Fiction on Saturday, June 12 at 8:00PM ET/PT, followed by IFC’s PULP FICTION ON THE DIME: 10th Anniversary Retrospect — featuring behind-the-scenes footage and NEW interviews with Quentin Tarantino, Uma Thurman and producer Lawrence Bender.
In the 10 years since its release, Pulp Fiction has ushered in a whole new generation of filmmakers who are eager to make their mark on the genre Tarantino helped to revive and reinvent. While putting his own stamp on pulp film, and easing a whole new generation of cinephiles into an appreciation for the genre, Tarantino is the first to admit the influence of earlier filmmakers on his own work. As much as Tarantino’s work has influenced those who came after him, his own work is arguably borne out of the work of those who came before.
The genre as a whole had much earlier beginnings dating back to the 1950s and the dime-store pulp novels on which they were originally based. With violence, crime, and gangsters as a common thread and with a film noir motif, the genre has grown into a tremendously popular category of cinema that continues to be redefined and re-explored in films all over the world.
“It all started out as a purely exploitative string of thriller films, teeming with blood and violence. But over the years, the whole thing has evolved into its own distinct genre that is imaginative and truly artistic,” said Michael Ruggiero, Director of Programming, IFC. “Pulp films have a huge following, and based on feedback we get from our viewers, our weekly Pulp Indies strand is one of the most consistently popular features on IFC.”
IFC has long been bringing viewers a regular dose of the pulp genre with its weekly Pulp Indies feature. The strand, which airs every Friday at 11:00PM ET/PT, features a different selection every week and has proved a reliable winner with the IFC audience. Pulp Indies Week is a natural progression for the network from a weekly occasion into an extended event.
