LA MOUSTACHE
A Film by Emmanuel Carrere
First Feature from Acclaimed French Novelist, Psychological Thriller Starring Vincent Lindon and Emmanuelle Devos, Opens Wednesday, May 24 In Exclusive Engagement at IFC Center
LA MOUSTACHE, the first feature from acclaimed writer Emmanuel Carrere, opens Wednesday, May 24 for an exclusive engagement at the IFC Center, 323 Avenue of the Americas at West 3rd Street. A thriller about a man whose life is completely derailed after a single, seemingly innocuous, impulsive act, LA MOUSTACHE stars Vincent Lindon (Friday Night) and Emmanuelle Devos (The Beat My Heart Skipped, Kings and Queen) in an adapatation of Carrere's own 1986 novel.
Marc (Lindon) and Agnes (Devos) are an attractive, successful Parisian couple, together for years. One evening, before joining friends for dinner, Marc decides on a whim to shave off the mustache he's worn all of his adult life. He waits patiently for his wife's reaction, but she seems not to notice. At dinner, their friends fail to remark upon the change. Stranger still, when he finally tells them, they all insist he never had a mustache. Is Marc going mad? Is he the victim of some elaborate conspiracy? Or has something in the world's order gone terribly awry?
One of France's most noted writers, Emmanuel Carrere published his first novel in 1984. In addition to La Moustache, his books include Class Trip, which he adapted into a screenplay for director Claude Miller, and The Adversary, the source for a film directed by Nicole Garcia and starring Daniel Auteuil. Among his other credits are several screenplays, among them a version of Leon Morin, Pretre, and a biography of the author Philip K. Dick. In 2003, Carrere directed the documentary Back to Kotelnitch, a look at a police investigation in a Russian town. La Moustache is his first fiction film as a director. He lives in Paris.
