NEW YORK, NY (September 26, 2014) – Sundance Selects announced today that the company has acquired North American rights to Lina Esco’s FREE THE NIPPLE from Disruptive Films and Emotion Pictures. The film, with a screenplay by Hunter Richards, stars Lola Kirke, Esco, Casey LaBow, Zach Grenier, Monique Coleman, and Griffin Newman, with original music by Nick Littelmoore & Peter Mayes from Empire of the Sun and Henry Hey. The film was produced by Esco, Richards, and Lisa Azuelos. It was executive produced by Julien Madon, Dominique Romano, Lisa Momberger, and co–produced by Gigi Graff and Leah Kilpatrick.
Inspired by true events, Esco’s film is the impetus and inspiration of the current #FreetheNipple campaign embraced in pop culture, celebrity endorsements and social media platforms across the globe. FREE THE NIPPLE follows a group of female cultural revolutionaries who take to the streets of New York City topless, to protest the archaic censorship laws in the United States. Activists and cultural engineers, Liv and With set out to start a revolution and change the system through publicity stunts and graffiti installations, armed with First Amendment lawyers. The film explores the hypocrisy in our media-dominated society, where acts of violence and killing are glorified, while images of a woman’s body are censored by the FCC and the MPAA. What is more obscene: Violence or a Nipple?
Gregory Chambet and Dimitri Stephanides of WTFilms negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers.
