IFC Films Unlimited’s first guest curator will be Kenneth Turan, former lead critic at the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio’s Morning Edition as well as the director of the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes. His selections include:
“After The Wedding.” This Danish film about family secrets is an unapologetic melodrama, where emotions are large and the coincidences larger still. But as directed by Susanne Bier, its that paradoxical melodrama that refuses to acknowledge being melodramatic. Instead, it uses psychological acuity, intense feelings and forceful acting (Mads Mikkelson stars) to ignore labels and flat out overpower audiences.
“A Christmas Tale.” Director Arnaud Desplechin makes the best of top French acting talent Catherine Deneuve, Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Devos to expand the envelope of what’s possible within traditional narrative boundaries. A gathering for a Christmas holiday results in a captivating portrait of the most gorgeously fractious family imaginable. Energizing, captivating and pure pleasure to experience.
“45 Years.” Accomplished veterans Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtney conduct a master class in understated acting in writer-director Andrew Haigh’s superlative British drama. The ever-shifting power dynamics of a long-term relationship are explored when an unexpected piece of news jolts a devoted couple, opening a fissure that threatens to swallow their marriage without a trace. Dramatic restraint has never been more devastating.
“Frances Ha.” A joint creation of star Greta Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach, who co-wrote the screenplay, this small miracle of a movie is honest and funny with an aim that’s true. The title character is a young woman who’s making a hash out of her life because she doesn’t know any better. Presented with the energy and verve of the French New Wave, this story not only makes you feel hopeful about movies, it allows you to feel that way about life.
“Like Father, Like Son.” A deceptively simple title for a film of considerable emotional complexity. Its children switched at birth story sounds schematic but what we see is both moving and meaningful. The reason is the innate restraint, unforced empathy and effortless skill of Japan’s Hirokazu Kore-eda, recent winner of Cannes Palme D’Or for “Shoplifters.”
IFC Films Unlimited is available now in the U.S. and Canada through Apple TV channels on the Apple TV app. Customers can sign up for the extended 1 month free trial now on the Apple TV app through September 30.
