Flipper has been both a film and television series featuring an intelligent dolphin that first came to the silver screen in 1963 as a feature film about a young boy in the Florida Keys who convinces his fisherman father to accommodate a dolphin injured by a harpoon. A television adaptation of Flipper was created the next year and ran as an adventure series on NBC from 1964 – 1967, where Flipper helped an Everglades National Park ranger and his sons enforce park rules. A few more adaptations of the television show came in the second half of the century, followed by the most recent Flipper film in 1996 starring Elijah Wood.
