Behind many great films are greater women. The Independent Film Channel (IFC) presents girlflicks: Films Made by Women, a weeklong on-air festival of female filmmakers, airing Monday, April 7 to Friday, April 11 beginning at 8:00PM/ET. The festival features three IFC productions; IFC Productions' girlfight, a network television premiere; IFC Productions' Boys Don't Cry; and a special episode of the critically acclaimed IFC Original series Dinner for Five: Girls Night Out.
Dinner for Five: Girls Night Out kicks off the festival on Monday, April 7 at 8:00PM (ET/PT). Hosted by Jon Favreau, the exclusive episode features Cathy Moriarty (Raging Bull), Beverly D'Angelo (Vacation), Rosie Perez (Do the Right Thing) and Catherine Kellner (Pearl Harbor). Jon enjoys a meal and lively conversation with these versatile actresses as they share their successes and struggles in the biz.
With its network television premiere on Monday, April 7 at 9:00PM (ET/PT), IFC Productions' award-winning girlfight, directed by Karyn Kusama, is the story of a tough Brooklyn girl who takes up boxing to overcome adversity at home and in high school. When she falls in love with a fellow amateur boxer, a battle of the sexes emerges when they must square off in the ring. The stunning debut performance by Michelle Rodriguez earned her the Breakthrough Award at the 2000 Gotham Awards and the film won the Grand Jury prize at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival and the Award of the Youth / Foreign Film at Cannes in 2000.
Airing Wednesday, April 9 at 9:00PM (ET/PT), IFC Productions' Boys Don't Cry, directed by Kimberly Peirce, tells the true story of Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank), the popular new guy in a small Nebraska town. Brandon, born Teena Brandon, chose to live her life as a man and suffered tragic consequences as a result. The controversial film won an Oscar?, Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress.
