LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, JANUARY 6, 2003 – WE: WOMEN'S ENTERTAINMENT has greenlighted production on the one-hour special, TV & THE SINGLE GIRL, it was announced today by Martin von Ruden, Executive Vice President and General Manager at the network. Chronicling the evolution of single women on television through the decades, the special is slated to air in March, 2003.
Throughout history, single women have played an important role in groundbreaking television. From "Mary Tyler Moore" to "Ally McBeal" to "Sex & The City" – viewers tune in faithfully to watch the trials and tribulations of the single girl. Her evolution is evidenced in so many ways – she has a career, she's a mother, she goes to therapy, she likes men, she likes women, she likes sex. Has television finally caught up with reality?
TV & THE SINGLE GIRL will feature exclusive and personal interviews with some of television's most unforgettable female characters juxtaposed with clips from series that epitomized the single girl and her experiences. Single girls from the small screen including Diahann Carroll (Julia-1968-71), Valerie Harper (Rhoda-1974-78, Mary Tyler Moore Show-1970-77), Cindy Williams (Laverne & Shirley-1976-83), Lea Thompson (Caroline in the City-1995-1999) and Kathy Griffin (Suddenly Susan-1996-2000) will be featured in the special.
