JERICHO, NY, September 24, 2001 – From the neighborhood drag race to the breakneck action of the Indianapolis 500, car racing has traditionally been a “man’s sport.” On Tuesday, November 20 at 8:00PM/ET, WE: WOMEN’S ENTERTAINMENT offers a female perspective on this adrenaline-fueled sport with the premiere of FAST WOMEN. The one-hour documentary takes an in-depth look at all aspects of women in racing, from past to present.
Women’s interest in racing has always exceeded far beyond that of the flag holder at the local drag race; unfortunately the opportunities were not always available. Prior to 1971, women were not allowed to race, banned from the press box and the racecar garage. The extent of their participation was limited to that of a spectator. Once a few started racing, sports announcers would describe their races as “buzzing around the court faster than the latest gossip.” It was not easy getting past such prejudices, but a select group of pioneering women changed the minds of many by competing at equal and/or superior levels of their male counterparts. FAST WOMEN will show how these female racers defied all odds and managed to integrate themselves into the highly competitive sport.
From Shirley “queen of speed” Muldowney, to 19 year-old Sarah Fisher – the youngest woman ever to compete in the Indianapolis 500 – the sport has gotten an overhaul as female drivers have become fierce competitors on the track. Featuring interviews with celebrated racers including Janet Guthrie, Lyn St. James, Tammy Jo Kirk, Patty Moise and Shawna Robinson, FAST WOMEN chronicles the evolution of women in racing through their personal experiences. While exploring everything from their loyal fan base to the physical challenges of the sport, the documentary will show these women’s struggle and triumph as they make their way around the track.
FAST WOMEN is produced by Candy Hearts Production, Inc. Rachel Belofsky serves as Executive Producer and Judith Orlowski is Executive Producer for the network.
